Let’s Play Group
This group of youngsters from 0 to 6 was developed to give families an introduction into group play. Sometimes the group meets at the Michigan Sign Language Service Office for art activities and other times there are family outings to Bounce Houses, the Warren Pool and Jungle Java. Families are encouraged to join in these activities and to bring siblings along.
The Let’s Play Group activities are announced in the FEDS News Today newsletter and on the web site calendar.
Simple Signs for Tiny Hands
Familiar with a scenario like this? -- At 3am your 10-month old baby is crying inconsolably at night. “What’s wrong? -- you ask, wishing you REALLY COULD understand her thoughts and attempts to vocalize to tell you what she wants. 3am quickly becomes 4am, 5am.
Now, imagine THIS -- Scenario around 3:00am you ask your 10-month old infant “What’s wrong?”; she immediately forms her hands to sign “teddy bear”! (Tapping her chest with both hands signifies the act of cuddling a teddy bear or other soft toy. You hand her Mr. Teddy, and gratefully, your baby grabs and squeezes her comforting little bear buddy, and immediately lies back down to sleep.
Behavior is Communication: Some of the simplest signs can elevate a thrown glass of juice when milk was wanted. A want for “more” of something or being able to say: “finished, all done, book, fish crackers, popcorn, daddy, mommy” are all easy for children to communicate with Simple Sign Language. Join our own Bethany McLain for 4 weeks of Simple Signs for Tiny Hands classes.
