SPECIAL OLYMPICS
"Let me win. But if I can not win, let me be brave in the attempt" - Special Olympics Athlete Oath
Special Olympics provides year-round sports training and athletic competition to children and adults with intellectual disabilities and remains as vital today as it did when the movement was founded in 1968. For people with intellectual disabilities, Special Olympics is often the only place where they have an opportunity to participate in their communities, develop belief in themselves, and feel like champions.
Macomb County games are held in the spring at Macomb Community College in Warren. State games are held in June at Central Michigan University in Mt Pleasant.
We are proud to say that Families Exploring Down Syndrome has established itself as “FEDS Independents.” With more students not attending classes in a Special Education setting, we found students who were missing out on Special Olympic sports and competition.
We work with Special Olympics to certify coaches in a variety of sports and to coordinate efforts so students can participate in not only the spring games but also the State Games in Mt. Pleasant.
We have had coaches certified in Bocce, Cross Country and Track and Field. We look forward to supporting more athletic endeavors as FEDS parents move forward to start teams and leagues in other sports.
