Spirited Karate
spir•it•ed /spiritid/ Full of energy, enthusiasm, and determinationb
In July of 2009, FEDS parents approached a karate instructor and asked what he thought about having a karate class over the summer for individuals with intellectual disabilities (particularly Down syndrome).
Without hesitation a special Karate class was started.
Sensei Anthony Sorrento says: This class is for adults and youngsters, ages 12 and up that are developmentally, cognitively, and/or physically delayed. The class is designed to go at the pace of each student’s ability and to encourage them to achieve their highest potential. Students progress through the belt ranks according to effort and personal development.
The benefits of karate for people with Special Needs are immense. Karate stresses development of balance, coordination, discipline, focus, attention, physical fitness, and confidence.
My main objective as a Sensei is to teach anyone that has the desire to learn karate-do.
